In April 2019, many Amazon employees signed a letter to the board of directors, asking to take action in order to fight climate change.
It didn't take much to Bezos & Co. to act. Just few days ago, the company announced its intention to start up three renewable energy projects, declaring that it was committed to minimising its carbon emissions. The goal of these projects will be to provide energy to Amazon Web Services data centers.
A wind plant, with a max capacity of 50 megawatts (MW), will be built up in Kintyre (Scotland) and is expected to generate 168K megawatt hours (MWh) of energy each year. Amazon affirmed that the facility investment will be “largest corporate wind power purchase agreement in the UK.”Furthermore, they will bake two solar projects. On will be in North Carolina and the other one in Virginia will produce up to 215 MW in total per year. These projects are expected to be operative, generating energy by 2021. They won't be owned by the Amazon, however it's thanks to its commitment to buy their output that the projects will be started.
Recently, Kara Hurst (Amazon’s Director of Sustainability) has said that the firm was “committed to minimising our carbon emissions and reaching 80% renewable energy use across the company by 2024.” This year, Amazon has been reported as one of more than 700 companies which do not publish any of their environmental information.”
In September, Amazon co-founded an initiative called The Climate Pledge, which asks signers to reach “net zero carbon across their businesses” by 2040.
Furthermore, a project called has been launched “transparency website”. Its purpose is to report on what it describes as its “sustainability commitments, initiatives, and performance.” The site also has information on the firm’s carbon footprint, which it reports as being 44.40 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent for the 2018 fiscal year.
Amazon is just one of many firms looking to power operations using renewable sources of energy. On one hand, it allows companies to be more profitable, therefore increase profits, in different ways. It consistently decrease energy consumptions and therefore bills and be less affected by price changes. It will result in less service disruption, allowing all stakeholders to always have access to your product or service.
And finally, a powerful return on investment.
On the other hand, it will fulfil the Corporate responsibility commitment which nowadays is crucial in terms of marketing. Choosing renewable energy over traditional energy could make a difference between a client choosing your business or a competitor’s. It's also an alternative way to attract new customers and clients can definitely be a challenge, especially in a. hyper competitive market.
